American Cowboy Magazine initiated the National Day of the
American Cowboy campaign in 2004. They began this
celebration as a way to acknowledge and preserve the
heritage, history, and culture of America’s Cowboy.

*Thanks to Senator Craig Thomas of Wyoming, who sponsored
the resolution, as well as several other politicians from
Western states, the first national observance of the of the
American Cowboy occurred on July 23, 2005.

That same year, President George W. Bush issued a statement
of support for the resolution, proclaiming “We celebrate
the cowboy as a symbol of the grand history of the American
West. The cowboy’s love of the land and love of the country
are examples for all Americans.
